Inside the university our aim is to provide advice on the design and analysis of quantitative research postgraduate students at both Masterate and PhD level. On occasion this leads to more extensive collaborative research programmes within Massey that may be funded by external agencies.

We provide support for any university discipline that uses statistical methods. To varying degrees this includes almost all subjects taught and/or researched at the university.

The statisticians have a wealth of practical experience, so we are also able to look at problems which you may have that are not yet well defined, and discuss with you what we are able to provide by way of a solution. Sometimes the best solutions are statistical, sometimes not, but we are happy to talk to you to help you establish what you best alternative is. In our view, this two way process is a required initial step. Dr Alasdair Noble acts as the consultant though other members of the Statistics Group help with problems related to their areas of expertise.

Because the foundation matters so much, we recommend that you involve us in the planning stage of your project, and that if you are a research student you bring your supervisor to our first meeting. This helps avoid time consuming wrong directions and creates better communication. Joint supervision may be recommended in some cases. We will make every effort to explain the statistical aspects of the problem in your terms, and sometimes we are able to recommend particular applied Statistics courses you may find relevant and useful.

Using sound design, data collection procedures, and analysis, through appropriate selection of statistical technique and statistical software, we are able to provide statistical rigour to your research programme. This way we can ensure you have the best chance of finding the information you seek, or establishing the results you are looking for.

Where necessary, we can help select or develop innovative statistical methods. This interface is often the impetus for innovative statistical concepts and has in the past led to collaborative funded research and joint publication of interdisciplinary papers.

Vouchers

Consultations for postgraduate students have been supported by the DVC Academic and Research so there has been no charge. Unfortunately this support has been withdrawn from 2008 so there will be a charge of $75, per hour of work, paid for by vouchers, which are available to Departments/Institutes/Schools (by internal transfer) from the secretary at the IFS (Statistics) Office Level 2 AHA2.76. Each voucher covers 1 hour of consultants work.
