Postgraduate Financial Assistance

A variety of funding is available to support postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, although some such funds are easier to access if a good student or postdoctoral fellow has already expressed interest in a particular project - so please contact the potential supervisor early on if you are interested so that we can explore such funding opportunities.

  • Massey Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarships/ Massey Doctoral Scholarships
    Massey University awards a number of PhD scholarships each year. Their 2008 value is $27,000/$22,000 per annum for a maximum of three years. Each year up to ten Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarships will be awarded to the top candidates applying for a Doctoral Scholarship. Both scholarships include a PhD thesis tuition fee waiver at the domestic rate. Applications must be in the hands of the Scholarships Office, Massey University, by 1 July for study in the current year, or 1 October for study in the following year.

  • Massey Masterate Scholarships and Massey Masterate Scholarships for Maori Students
    These scholarships are awarded to students who are undertaking research full time for a Masterate thesis (100 points). Their value (2008) is $15,000 for one year. Applications close with the Scholarships Office, Massey University on 1 July for study in the current year or 1 October for study in the following year.

  • RSNZ R. H. T. Bates Postgraduate Scholarship  
    For PhD study in Sciences or Engineering.

  • While the above are the most numerous awards given each year, it is well worth going to the Massey awards search page and entering your information in the search. There are many many awards of varied amounts for which various groups of students may apply. Results display below your search criteria.
  • Other Scholarships
    External funding agencies, such as the Health Research Council, offer scholarships for specific Masters and/or PhD projects. Prospective graduate students should discuss the availability of such scholarships with research supervisors.

  • Demonstrating in Undergraduate Laboratories
    All chemistry and physics postgraduate students are expected to assist with teaching in undergraduate laboratory classes. This provides additional income.

Funding opportunities for post-graduate students to travel abroad for conferences and research visits

  • RSNZ travel awards
  • Claude McCarthy Fellowships
    The object of the fellowships is to enable graduates of "any one or more of the Universities of New Zealand" to undertake "original work or research in literature, science or medicine". (The words literature, science or medicine will be interpreted liberally.)
  • Paykel Trust potential source of travel money for post-grads in health-related research fields.
  • IFS Postgraduate Travel Awards (applications called for twice yearly).

  • New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (all international students who meet the eligibility criteria)
  • New Zealand International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (up to 20 per year) provide financial support for postgraduate students from China, Korea, ASEAN countries, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil seeking postgraduate degrees by research in New Zealand universities.  Applications will be considered from international postgraduate students from these countries, including those who are already in the process of applying for entry to a New Zealand university, with a limited number of scholarships available to students who are already enrolled in a New Zealand university.
  • NZ (Official Development Assistance) Post Graduate Scholarships
    Prospective postgraduate students from a number of countries are eligible to apply for NZAID Postgraduate Scholarships. Write to the International Students Office for further information.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships
    All Commonwealth Students are eligible for Commonwealth Scholarships in New Zealand. Applications are made through the appropriate agency in the country of the candidate's residence. However interested students should first contact Peter Derrick, Head of Institute. to discuss research projects.
  • New Zealand Development Scholarships
    These are available to individuals from selected partner countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
  • Feodor Lynen Research postdoctoral fellowship
    German citizens can apply to the Humboldt Foundation for a Feodor Lynen Research postdoctoral fellowship to work with an ex-Humboldt Fellow. Fellowships can also be obtained from the DAAD or the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina.

Remember to look in your own country for scholarships and awards that allow you to study abroad. Most countries have opportunities especially at postdoctoral level for further research.
