Rigaku Spider X-ray diffractometerA Rigaku Spider X-ray diffractometer, funded via the MacDiarmid Institute, has been installed in the Institute's X-ray laboratory. This instrument is designed for the structural analysis of small molecule and protein crystals and crystalline powders. The X-ray source is a microfocus rotating anode X-ray generator (Cu radiation). The high beam intensity and curved image plate detector are designed to allow challenging problems involving small and/or weakly diffracting crystals to be tackled. We have recently collected data on a needle-shaped crystal with short axes of around 2 microns; this yielded data that refined to better than 11%! Several published structures from the Spider are now online 1 2 3. Interested users are invited to contact Shane Telfer for further information.
